Restoring the Coral Reef

Fairmont Orchid became the first hotel in Hawaiʻi to partner with the ʻĀkoʻakoʻa Reef Restoration Program in a groundbreaking effort to protect, preserve and revitalize the coral reefs of West Hawaiʻi, including Pauoa Bay, which face mounting threats from climate change, coastal pollution and overfishing. As this vital ecosystem hugs the coastline of the resort, Fairmont Orchid supported ʻĀkoʻakoʻa to help restore the coral reef through coral propagation and community stewardship.

In 2025, the property launched a guided snorkel experience allowing guests to view the coral restoration site alongside our beach ambassadors, as well as hosted coral chats designed to educate guests and the community about marine conservation.

Coral Chat

Did you know coral is a living animal? Fairmont Orchid is proud to host Coral Chat events to highlight the vibrant marine life that calls our shoreline home. During this time, guests are invited to stop by and connect with a representative from the ʻĀkoʻakoʻa Reef Restoration Program to learn more about our meaningful partnership and the vital work being done to restore the coral reef in Pauoa Bay. Discover surprising coral facts, gain insight into how these delicate ecosystems are protected, and learn how you can help support the preservation of Hawaiʻi’s underwater treasures.

Stay tuned for upcoming event dates.
